Sun Protection
The most overlooked category on every Camino packing list. You will be in direct sun for 6–8 hours a day. Get this right.
La Roche-Posay Anthelios Shaka Fluid SPF50+
Premium pickThe benchmark for active sun protection. Sweat-resistant, invisible finish, non-comedogenic. Pack two for the full Francés.
CeraVe AM Facial Moisturising Lotion SPF50
Premium pickSPF50 and daily moisturiser in one. Saves weight and time. Great for skin that runs dry in wind and sun.
Nivea Sun Protect Lip Balm SPF50
EssentialLips burn faster than anything else on your face. This weighs 4.8g. No excuse not to pack it.
Altruist Face Fluid SPF50
Budget pickBudget alternative to La Roche-Posay. Dermatologist-developed, deliberately priced low. Does the job.
Nivea After Sun Moisture
EssentialApplied every evening it makes a visible difference by week three. Get the 100ml travel size.
Pack & Luggage
Your pack should weigh no more than 10% of your body weight when full. Most first-timers pack too heavy. Be ruthless.
Decathlon Forclaz 40L Trek 100
Premium pickThe most commonly seen pack on the Camino. Comfortable, durable, well-organised. Buy in-store at any Decathlon across Spain, France or Portugal before you set off.
Pack rain cover
EssentialGalicia gets wet regardless of season. A dedicated rain cover weighs almost nothing and saves everything inside. Buy one that fits your pack size.
Footwear
More pilgrim trips end due to foot problems than any other cause. Break boots in for at least 100km before the Camino.
Trail running shoes — Women
Premium pickIncreasingly the preferred choice over hiking boots. Lighter, faster drying, less likely to cause blisters than traditional boots. Break in for at least 100km before the Camino.
Trail running shoes — Men
Premium pickSame principle — low-cut trail shoes outperform hiking boots for most pilgrims. Lighter, faster drying, better for long flat stages. Break in well before you set off.
Merino wool hiking socks (3 pairs)
EssentialNon-negotiable. Merino regulates temperature, resists odour, and reduces friction better than synthetic. Bring three pairs and rotate daily.
Lightweight flip flops
EssentialYour feet need to breathe in the evenings. These double as albergue shower shoes and weigh almost nothing. Do not walk 800km without giving your feet an evening off.
Toiletries & Health
Everything in travel size. Pack soap that doubles as laundry detergent to save weight and space.
Compeed blister plasters
EssentialThe most important item in your first aid kit. Apply at the first hot spot — do not wait for a blister. Buy before you go; expensive in Spanish pharmacies.
Voltarol Pain Relief Gel
EssentialFor knees, ankles, and shin splints. More targeted than oral ibuprofen for joint and muscle issues. Highly rated and widely trusted.
Kitsch Moisturising Shampoo Bar
Premium pickReplaces shampoo and can double as body wash. Highly rated, lasts 4–6 weeks, removes a bottle from your pack entirely. One of the best reviewed solid bars on Amazon.
